She Wore a Yellow Ribbon: The Cavalry in the West
A Temporary Exhibit April 12-August 17, 2008
The U.S. Cavalry played an important role in the opening of the west in the mid 19th Century, and continued their presence long after hostilities with the Indians were over.
This exhibit highlights some of the uniforms, equipment, arms and related cavalry items in the context of the history of Utah and Fort Douglas from 1857 until the end of World War II when the mounted cavalry was officially disbanded.
This gallery is broken up into several sections, each grouping the items of a chronological period. This allows study of items as a grouping as they would have been used at the time. Where possible, information has been added about the shifting tactics of the periods as new types of weapons were used by the cavalry.
The Museum is grateful for the generous support of the collectors, historians and benefactors who helped examine and present this piece of history to the public, both in person at the time of the special exhibit, and here in a permanent "virtual gallery."
